10-22-2013 STILL NO CONTRACT FOR MEDFORD TEACHERS

Oct 22, 2013 -- 7:46am

THE MEDFORD TEACHERS UNION RALLIED AT LAST NIGHT'S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING FOR WHAT THEY'RE CALLING FAIR TERMS. TEACHERS, COACHES, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS SPOKE-OUT DURING THE MEETING'S PUBLIC COMMENT PORTION. THE DISTRICT MADE ITS LAST OFFER A MONTH AGO WITH THE HELP OF MEDIATOR. TEACHERS SAY THE 6% PAY RAISE THE DISTRICT IS PROPOSING IS NOT REALLY A RAISE BECAUSE THE NEW CONTRACT OFFER WOULD ALSO MAKE TEACHERS PAY THEIR OWN 6% PENSION CONTRIBUTION. THEY'RE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT LANGUAGE IN THE PROPOSAL... THEY SAY DOES NOT PROTECT A 40 HOUR WORK WEEK. THE DISTRICT SAYS THE PROPOSED SALARY AND BENEFITS ALIGN WITH THOSE PROVIDED TO OTHER DISTRICT EMPLOYEES AND REFLECT THE MARKET ALLOWING STABLE FUNDING FOR THE FUTURE.
