We now know the name of the man accused of firing a rifle, killing a five year old girl, and injuring another woman.
30-year old Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. is lodged in the Josephine County Jail, charged with second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a machine gun.
Polices say shortly after 9pm Thursday night, Meyer fired the rifle from a lower level apartment at 1017 NW C street in Grants Pass. The round penetrated the ceiling, striking and killing a 5-year old girl in the upper level apartment. The other victim, a 44-year old woman, also suffered a gunshot wound, was transported to 3 Rivers Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Meyer, a transient, was taken into custody without incident, and the investigation continues.
UPDATE: 11:30am KMED news has spoken with Deputy Chief Bill Landis in Grants Pass asking for clarification regarding the weapon connected to the tragic shooting death of a 5-year old Grants Pass girl, and wounding of a 44-year old woman.
Deputy Chief Landis says there is no confirmation on the exact type of firearm used. It is believed to be a fully automatic rifle, unknown whether it came from the factory that way, or was modified after the fact.
This is a preliminary investigation, and the rifle will be test-fired to confirm or refute the charge of unlawful possession of a machine gun.
Once again, Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. is charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, 3rd degree assault, and unlawful possession of a machine gun.
