5-15-2013 HIT AND RUN IN GP
Grants Pass, Ore. - On Friday, April 26, 2013 at 7:53 am, the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received multiple calls reporting a child had been struck by a vehicle at the intersection of SE 9th St. and SE Riverside Ave. in Grants Pass. The 911 caller reported the vehicle which struck the child and mother failed to stop and fled north on SE 9th St. Officers searched the area but did not locate the vehicle.
Grants Pass Fire Rescue and AMR arrived and treated a seriously injured five year old girl and her mother. Both were initially transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital. The girl suffered a skull fracture, multiple fractures to her right arm, and multiple bruises and abrasions. She was subsequently flown to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland for further treatment. The mother received minor injuries and accompanied her daughter to Portland.
Officers and Detectives spoke to numerous witnesses. The investigation revealed the girl and her mother were walking to school heading south on SE 9th St. on the western sidewalk. They were crossing SE Riverside when a white male adult driving a black SUV traveling east on SE Riverside struck them in the intersection. The suspect then turned north onto SE 9th St. and sped away.
The SUV is possibly an older model GMC Jimmy with a spare tire mounted on the back. It was described as being flat black and dirty. The suspect was described as a white male adult, possibly in his 30’s wearing a dark baseball cap and dark sunglasses.
