5-3-13 PORTLAND MAYOR WANTS TO DECERTIFY POLICE UNION FOR COMMANDERS

May 03, 2013 -- 9:57am

The new mayor of Portland wants to decertify the union that represents police commanders. Charlie Hales says that the commanders are managers and it doesn't make sense for them to be in a union. The city attorney's office filed a petition this week asking the state Employment Relations Board to clarify the public employee status of the union members. A former attorney for rank-and-file police officers told The Oregonian newspaper that the mayor's move is a direct attack on unions. A lawyer for the Portland Police Commanding Officers Association had no comment.
