Barbara Lange e-mailed me this picture of her California friend's new "ride", a 1961 Datsun Pickup.

What makes this so interesting is how the old import beast, with no computerized ignition systems, catalytic converters, dual-cam anything, manages to eke out a very-respectable 31.5 miles per gallon. And it's 51 years old, and still runs perfectly.

As well as my PT runs now, I can't help but wonder how reliable the "electronic everything" on it will operate in 2042? And as far as gas mileage goes, this Datsun kicks the PT's butt. All of the federally mandated "safety-nanny" accesories add incredible weight, and complexity to a modern vehicle.No, you don't have any "choice".

We talk about the book's plot, its main focus on the dangers we face from EMP,  the Electro-Magnetic-Pulse. Speaking of which, an EMP would kill my PT, while the Datsun (above) would survive it just fine.  That's progress.
