Whether it is the war on straws, gender lie’s, or fake news, people who deny truth will be left blindfolded in a world of facts they pretend don’t exist. This is the willfully blind leading the next two generations into blind ignorance. Time for the purveyors of truth to have courage.

Southern Oregon’s Bigfoot

by Dennis Powers

From Grants Pass and Ashland to Cave Junction and Prospect, the sightings of Bigfoot, otherwise known as Sasquatch, have been numerous over the years; state and federal parks are also noteworthy as to these encounters, as around Crater Lake or the Oregon Caves. Given the widespread, thick forests and remote areas in our region, it isn’t too much of a stretch to see that we have had more than our share of these sightings.

Bigfoot is defined in most dictionaries, as a “very large, hairy, humanoid creature reputed to inhabit wilderness areas of the U.S. and Canada, especially in the Pacific Northwest.” These human-like beings are believed to be 8-foot-plus in height, primate-like, and the surviving descendants of a species named Gigantopithecus, a tall, ape-like creature from the Pleistocene epoch (a long period that ended 11,700 years ago.)

With the numerous sightings in Jackson and Josephine counties, it is difficult to pick the best ones, as all are interesting and certainly important to whoever’s making the report. Crater Lake and the Oregon Caves are the site of well-evidenced ones. In 1976, the Chief Park Naturalist observed a Sasquatch-like creature, for example, that was crossing the South Road at dusk. Two years later, two park rangers reported seeing “something large in the forest with a foul odor” that threw a pinecone at them.

If reports from rangers are doubtful, then the experiences of a Grants Pass clinical psychologist in 2000 at the Oregon Caves is noteworthy. Matthew Johnson was on a summer walk on the Big Tree Loop Trail, when he left his wife and children to “answer nature’s call.” He previously had heard strange “whoa, whoaa, whoaa” sounds and smelled a skunk-like stench.

While off the trail, the 6-foot/9-inch, 300-pound man had the scare of his life. Seeing movement to one side, Johnson turned to watch a Bigfoot9-foot-tall, hairy, huge, and quite real to himwho then disappeared back into the brush. The psychologist ran to his family and quickly herded them back to the caves. A long-time park ranger at the Oregon Caves accompanied Johnson the next day to investigate the site. Although the ranger didn’t believe then in Sasquatch, he said that without any question, Johnson had not made up the story. After finding a large Bigfoot track in the area of the sighting, the ranger (John Roth) became a believer.

Matthew Johnson was so taken by his experience, he told about this on television and through newspapers around the country. He established the Southern Oregon Bigfoot Society (“SOBS”) so that others could join him in finding the creature. This organization put together different expeditions into the forests near Grants Pass. The SOBS has reported discovering hair samples, handprints, footprints, and teeth imprints with a 3-1/2 inch gap between them. The group states they have come across boulders tossed into a road’s middle that were too heavy for any man to lift, along with trees broken off ten-feet high with limbs that were 1/2-foot in diameter.

These searches are not isolated occurrences. In the 1970s, three men built a Bigfoot trap west of Applegate Lake. Led by reports that an old miner had discovered 18-inch human-like tracks (indicating a 6-foot stride) in his garden near the upper reaches of the Applegate River, Ron Olson and two others decided to build a trap near the location. The constructed wooden box was 10-feet by 10-feet and built of 2-inch thick planks. A metal grate was the trap door and to be triggered by a Bigfoot reaching for a deer or rabbit carcass hung at the rear.

Built by special forestry permit, this cage is most likely the only official Bigfoot trap in the world. Located 1/2 mile west of Applegate Lake on the Collings Mountain Trail, telephone poles anchor it to the ground. Although the structure is in disrepair owing to the elements, it is a testimonial to the belief that these creatures do exist.

Although the arguments continue as to whether Sasquatch is a fact or only a myth, even some academics and anthropologists have written books and articles supporting its reality. Even so, your belief might depend on whether you are reading this article in a home study or camping out in the remote wilderness at night.
