The Parents Television Council issued an urgent warning to parents and schools about the content found in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” Season 2, which was just released on the platform last Friday, and has called on Netflix to pull the series entirely because of the potentially harmful content.

The second season of “13 Reasons Why” picks up with a lawsuit brought by the family of Hannah Baker against the school for failing to protect their daughter, and the many lives impacted by Hannah’s suicide. As the story unfolds, viewers learn about a pattern of coercive and predatory sexual behavior by the “jocks” against many female students at the school; the administration prioritizing and protecting the athletics program at the expense of the emotional and physical well-being of many of the students; and the “system’s” (school guidance counselors, teachers and administrators; parents; the criminal justice system) consistent failure to protect the kids who were being bullied and abused. One of the horrifying moments in the series is a group of boys sodomizing a teenage boy with a mop handle. This character is then shown plotting revenge by planning a school shooting.

“Netflix has delivered a ticking time bomb to teens and children who watch ’13 Reasons Why.’ The content and thematic elements of the second season are even worse than we expected. We would have liked to have 13 reasons for hope and redemption following the graphic suicide of the lead female teen character, but rather than providing a path forward, the season only provides cause for despondency,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

Senators Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., recently introduced the “Choose Medicare Act,” which would give every American the option to buy into Medicare. Their colleagues have already rolled out three other bills that would provide for a more limited Medicare buy-in, a Medicaid buy-in, and a full-fledged, government-run, single-payer system.

All of these bills would lead to the same inevitable outcome — a federal takeover of the nation’s healthcare system. Each of the government-sponsored buy-in plans could operate at a loss indefinitely. Private insurers don’t have that luxury; they’d ultimately go out of business.

6:35: Dr. Joshua Estrin Ph D. a leading conflict analysis expert, talks with Bill today. Today we’re talking about, yet another, shooting at a government school, this time in Santa Fe, Texas. Despite the student protests and focus on assault weapons, school shootings are still happening. For all the talk of making our schools safe, they are not. There are still security failures. Parents fear every day if their child will make it home. Can anything be done to make our schools safe? Do we have to think that a potential school shooting is now the new reality? Can anything be done?

Dr. Estrin says that this is not about gun control as many have argued including the students but rather a failure in the approach to security. He says over and over there have been glaring and major lapses with security that allowed these events to happen and they are never fixed. Even though, he personally favors gun control, Dr. Estrin says that is not even an issue. The issue that must be fixed are glaring failures in security and security protocols.

The Boatnik Celebration of Grants Pass

The activities start Thursday evening at the park with food, rides, games and activities. Friday usually includes a fireworks display on the river. Saturday starts with the Boatnik parade that ends at Riverside Park; activities continue there over the weekend with sprint and drag boat racing, carnival rides, arts and crafts, a pizza eating contest, Bingo, food vendors, and numerous other events. On Memorial Day, the Tom Rice Memorial White Water Hydroplane Race is on. This event is named after Tom Rice, a local State Marine Deputy who was very well liked, highly regarded, and lost his life in a 2002 helicopter crash on the river. More activities, a free sundae giveaway, and a second night of fireworks follow.

All of the funds raised from Boatnik by the nonprofit Active Club are earmarked for an impressive list of recipients. In supporting different programs, donations are made to 4-H programs, poor children, Pop Warner Football, the Boys and Girls Club, Girl and Boy Scouts of America, American Little League baseball, DARE, high school scholarships, youth soccer programs, and school programs. The club has purchased playground equipment for local parks; helped needy children and families during the holidays by providing toys and coats; and has provided nearly a hundred thousand dollars in scholarships to area seniors since this program’s inception.

One of Oregon’s largest festivals, the big draw is the hydroplane racing. The drag boat racing over the weekend and hydroplane time trials on Sunday focus attention on the coming Memorial Day hydroplane, white-water racing contest. With timing lights and a scoreboard, sheer speed shows when the racers and their boats perform. The drag boats typically race from 120- to 130-mph and can finish the 1/4-mile course in 6-1/2 seconds. The sprint boats can travel up to 80 mph in their races, but with tight turns through the buoyed course in front of Riverside Park.

The Tom Rice Memorial is the biggest race for the annual Oregon-California River Racers Series and is two complete laps at this time between Riverside Park and Robertson Bridge, thirteen miles down the river. Whether speeding over the Rogue River filled with rocks, rapids, tree limbs, other racers, or racing around a tight buoy course, a certain amount of fearlessness is definitely in order. And all of this is for charity.
