Comrade Jerry Brown and A.G. Sessions dust it up over immigration enforcement. Jerry is apparently hard at work turning the late great Golden State into a 3rd world nation….#1 in poverty.

Sessions has constitutional authority on his side…but still is a massive statist at heart: “There is no nullification. There is no secession. Federal law is the supreme law of the land. I would invite any doubters to go to Gettysburg, or to the tombstones of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln. This matter has been settled.”

We’re talking today about online scammers, and what you can do to identify a scam, and avoid it.

Online purchase scams are now the riskiest form of consumer fraud, according to a new report from the Better Business Bureau. In 2017, consumers reported more than 47,000 scams to BBB Scam Tracker (BBB.org/ScamTracker). BBB analyzed this information using its unique BBB Scam Risk Index to determine the riskiest scams based on exposure, susceptibility, and monetary loss. The findings, released for National Consumer Protection Week (U.S.) and Fraud Prevention Month (Canada), show some significant changes from 2016:

• Tax collection scams decreased 60% in volume of reports, likely due to the arrest in India in 2016 of a the ringleader of a network of call centers primarily responsible for the IRS scam
• Online purchase scams jumped from the 4^th riskiest scam to the top spot, likely due to an increase in exposure
• Home improvement scams dropped from 1^st to 6^th riskiest, despite a number of natural disasters that traditionally bring out “stormchasers”

Young people continue to be at higher risk for scams, and susceptibility decreases with age, although dollars lost increases when victims are older.

There was good news in the 2017 BBB Scam Tracker Annual Risk Report: New Trends in Scam Risk from the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust (BBB Institute).

Two companies have announced their plans to develop and deploy the first national drone traffic management system in Europe. A Swiss company Skyguide and the American company AirMap seek to create the digital infrastructure to “support safe and secure access to European skies for millions of drones.”

Skyguide expects to be the leader in Europe, with deployments across the continent by 2019 and 2020. The U.S. can catch up, but Congress must direct the FAA to accelerate its deployment timeline, ensuring a fully operational UTM system to be deployed in the United States in 2019. Even if we can’t deploy in the entire U.S. state and regional deployments are possible if the FAA works closely with governors and their state directors of aviation.

America has a golden opportunity to be a world leader in innovative technology which has numerous consumer benefits. The economic development and job creation opportunities will be enormous. This could be a whole new form of transportation.

As the national debate rages on the future of firearms in The United States, Mr. Vincent, on Friday, tried to engage students at South Medford High School, who were walking out of class in protest of gun violence, in conversation on the subject. Designed by the pre-eminent architect, Frank C. Clark, the Craterian was built in 1924 as a theatre with retail space, typical for the times; when opened, it had tenants as law offices and shops. George A. Hunt leased the built theatre and ran a contest to select the best name with the winner receiving a $25 prize. From the 1500 entries received, he chose “Craterian” as it was derived from the region’s Crater Lake, but also an adaptation of the time’s favorite movie-house name, the “Criterion.”

On October, 20, 1924, a sell-out audience of 1,200 people attended the grand opening to watch a play, “The Havoc,” and listen to music played on the “grand” Wurlitzer organ. Movie projectors were installed later for silent films, and as typical of this era, theatre and vaudeville acts were booked. Eighteen months after its opening, 15-year-old Ginger Rogers appeared on the Craterian’s stage and captivated the audience. The Medford Mail Tribune wrote: “Miss Rogers is a winsome little miss with captivating mannerisms and a pair of feet that make the most intricate dances seem easy.”

When talking pictures were brought out, the theatre quickly showed them, such as Al Jolson in the 1928 film, the “Jazz Singer.” When the Great Depression overcame the state and country, Hunt was forced to sell his lease to the chain of Fox theatres, but after their bankruptcy, he bought the lease back in 1933. The theatre operator remodeled the Craterian, reduced matinee prices to 15 cents, and showed “first-run” films such as the “Thin Man” series that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy. Despite these changes, revenues were hard to come by, and it took World War II with its nearby Camp White and thousands of soldiers wanting entertainment to make the times easier.

After the War for four decades, several operator and owner changes occurred with more building alterations, including the sale of the Wurlitzer organ due to the changing times. With the development of home television and multi-plex theatres, audiences diminished and took its toll on these theatres. In late 1985, the Craterian was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as Medford’s first “Movie Palace,” but by then it was closed. The old building was donated to the nearby Rogue Valley Art Association, the intent being to “foster community theatre activities.”

Past-Medford Mayor (2000-2004) Lindsay Berryman with other community leaders decided that the Craterian needed to be completely refurbished, not only for its historical place, but also to revitalize part of Medford’s downtown and support the arts. Over several years of effort, a total of $5.2 million was raised to completed renovate the building, including major structural changes. More than 600 individuals, foundations, the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, different state agencies, and businesses contributed. As one standout example, Sabroso (the Medford-centered, fruit puree and concentrates supplier) through its CEO Jim Root donated $275,000 over time when this help was really needed. The Roots did the same individually.

The newly-revitalized Craterian opened in March 1997. The new auditorium was designed to be more comfortable with a seating capacity of 750, but the new stage easily handled large concert and theatre productions. The theatre was initially named for Ginger Rogers, the long-time Southern Oregonian who appeared both as a youngster and then elderly actress in the theatre’s support.

In August 2012, the theatre was renamed “the Craterian Theater at The Collier Center for the Performing Arts,” in honor of local philanthropist, James Morrison Collier, who was a long-time Craterian supporter and had donated a substantial, but undisclosed, sum of money. The stage at the Collier Center is called the Ginger Rogers Stage; the James and Valerie Root Auditorium, who were also long-time supporters, retained its name. The Center also has named rooms and lobbies for other supporting individuals.

Today, the Craterian shows numerous different events, from local productions as the Rogue Opera and Youth Symphony to art shows, national productions, and exhibits. It is another historical place that is from the past, but with a strong presence now.

Another “Great Day in Government Edjoo-Kay-Shun History” (Bill’s Opinion)

Earlier today (Friday) S. Medford High lets a couple dozen Future Commies of America out – Was told they protest in solidarity for the repeal of the 2nd Amendment. (Each receives an unexcused absence) Clearly it’s time to repeal the 26th Amendment, and remove their right to stupidly influence public policy via their ignorant vote.

Arguably the Medford Education Association/549C does NOT teach these children about “Democide”, which is death at the hands of your own government. A disarmed populace is easy pickings for future tyrants, and a far greater threat to their future liberty.

In her latest piece, Nicole Neily says college students have a new champion on free speech who will take their cause to the courts and put the pedal to metal to hold universities accountable for trampling on students’ rights.

Neily: “We want to send a message to students that if their rights are being violated, they don’t need to take it – there are people across the country who will stand with them and support them. We’d also like to send a message to universities that the era of acting with impunity is over, because if they don’t reform their policies then they’re going to be held accountable in court. We believe that the freedom of speech is a sacrosanct American principle, and we’re sick of seeing the First Amendment trampled on college campuses.”
