Matt Ross: Cannes Film Festival Award Winner

By Dennis Powers

Ashlander Matt Ross–who carved out a professional niche as an actor and director–earned praise from the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 for his drama-comedy film, “Captain Fantastic.” Born in 1970, his family moved to Ashland. He graduated from Ashland High School and received the Best Director award for the film in the “Un Certain Regard” (“recognition of young talent”) category at the film festival. He was the director, screen writer, and credited with the story.

Under the tutelage of longtime OSF director-actors Jim Edmondson and Paul Barnes, Ross and a half-dozen childhood friends were introduced to acting and theater, which carried them into their careers as adults. Starting when Ross was 12, they would perform Shakespeare on Mondays for the theater actors. After Ashland High, Ross attended and graduated from The Juilliard School in New York.

His acting role took off in both television and movies in the mid- to late-’90s. He has had nearly 20 film roles: Ross worked as a supporting actor with directors such as Martin Scorsese on “The Aviator,” Mary Harron on “American Psycho,” and Terry Gilliam on “12 Monkeys.” He played Alby Grant on “Big Love” (fundamentalist Utah family that practices polygamy) and Gavin Belson on “Silicon Valley” (five young men that founded a startup company)–both on HBO. He also starred as Johnny Cash in the 2013 TV movie “Ring of Fire.” Ross’ first feature, “28 Hotel Rooms,” premiered in the NEXT section at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012.

Ross was a child of the 1980s in Ashland, stating that it has changed drastically since then. “It was a healthy place to grow up,” he wrote “I got to do a lot of theater and was exposed to 12 or 14 plays a year. If you grow up in L.A. or New York and want to get into theater, you get an agent and lawyer. But in Ashland, you do it for love, the beauty of writing, and love for the arts.”

“Captain Fantastic,” Ross’s second feature film, premiered in January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival, and then played at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition, the film won the Golden Space Needle Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Seattle International Film Festival.

“Captain Fantastic” leads with Viggo Mortensen–who played “Aragorn” in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy–among other film credits. Viggo was the “loving, involved father of six children, who were raised in the wild and find themselves out of place on a trip to a big city funeral, complete with freeways, clash of values, and cultural shifts.” It is a timeless story and well done.
